Curriculum and Instruction

Welcome to Curriculum and Instruction!  This page has been developed to help you learn about the district's programs and curriculum.

"The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn" (Alvin Toffler, 1970)

High standards and academic excellence is the goal we continuously strive for in our schools.  We strive to provide a comprehensive learning experience designed to meet the needs of our student population.

Our district staff is dedicated to creating a learning environment in which knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving flourish.  As members of a learning community, students, administrators, and support staff strive to do their best to meet the learning needs that exist in our school district.

We are, and have always have been, focused on graduating literate students prepared for life outside of high school.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or comments about our programs.  We are here to help you in any way we can.

Resources for Teachers:

Engage NY is an excellent resource provided by the New York State Education Department that will help all of us, parents, teachers, and administrators to understand the changes that are currently happening in education in the area of mathematics.  Use this resource to stay up-to-date on the curiculuar resources we use to teach mathematics in Owen County Schools.

Deconstructed English / Language Arts Standards are the complete set of deconstructed standards for English/Language Arts from the Kentucky Department of Education. These were created collaboratively by teachers and leaders across the Commonwealth. Please note that these deconstructions have been reviewed, edited, and revised based on feedback from internal and external reviewers.

Continuous Instructional Improvement Technology System is a tool designed to pull standards, instructional materials, lesson plans, assessments, data and professional development all together into an integrated online resource. CIITS is a one-stop shop that provides Kentucky educators with the resources aligned to standards that support highly effective teaching and learning in their classrooms, schools, and districts.

Kentucky Department of Education Assessment Overview is the assessment and accountability system for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Beginning in 1990, Kentucky chose to have an all-inclusive assessment and accountability system by having all Kentucky public school students participate in annual testing with the results of those assessments included in the state’s accountability system for schools and districts.

Deconstructed Mathematics Standards are the complete set of deconstructed standards for Mathematics from the Kentucky Department of Education. These were created collaboratively by teachers and leaders across the Commonwealth. Please note that these deconstructions have been reviewed, edited, and revised based on feedback from internal and external reviewers.  In our schools, we use Engage NY, and its resources, to teach these standards.

Next Generation Science Standards were approved by the Kentucky Board of Education on June 15, 2013. The science standards have completed the legislative review process and are now incorporated into the Kentucky Academic Standards for implementation in the classroom.  The NGSS were based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education, published by the National Academies Press, and are available to download or read online for free.

Kentucky Core Academic Standards are the minimum content standards required for all students before graduating from Kentucky public high schools. This document specifies the content standards for the required credits for high school graduation and the primary, intermediate and middle level content standards leading up to these requirements.
