Goals and Descriptors
The
ultimate goal of the Band program at Owen Co. is to offer the best instruction
and guidance in the instrumental field of study as possible.
Goal one: Use and fulfill the National Standards of Music concerning instrumental pedagogy.
Goal
two: Be an active member in KMEA so that students can benefit from programs
offered to groups and to individuals through active participation in various
performance instructional activities.
Goal
three: Use technology to help enhance the student’s musical abilities from a
fundamental level to a performance level.
Goal
four: Give students the opportunity to perform in front of educated panels as
well as perform concerts for community.
Goal
five: Support Owen Co. School System through performances and services that
promote well rounded individuals.
Goal six: Give students the ability to become life-long consumers, participants, and supporters of music.
In
order to offer the best all-around education for band students the following is
being enacted:
Due to changes in our curriculum
and growing graduation requirements we have removed Marching Band from our
curriculum and made it a strictly after school activity. The Marching Band does
rehearse after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (mostly) and perform at home
football games and KMEA sanctioned Marching Band competitions. In order for the Marching Band to continue to actively
participate in KMEA sanctioned competitions, the concert band must participate
in the KMEA Concert Band Festival that takes place in the springtime.
2. The class is a
yearlong class because we perform all year long.
We are adjudicated all year long.
For us to meet KMEA guidelines, we must be all year long.
The Band Class
has been setup so that the majority of classes that you have to take and might
want to take can be done. There are
a few (but rare) instances where a conflict can occur.
90% of the time all classes can be taken in time.
It is a matter of being patient. If a class can not be avoided the
situation will be resolved between the director, the student, and the parent to
ensure that the student is recognized as an active participant in the program
and rewarded that way as well. Students
not in the class cannot participate in KMEA events such as the KMEA Solo and
Ensembles festival, the KMEA All-State Bands, the NKBDA Honor Bands, and the EKU
Honor Bands.
3. The band will not
actively rehearse after school during the 2nd semester as a concert
group. (We have an hour and a half block of time every day of the week during
school.) Therefore all performance preparation takes place during school class
time unless we have a special guest conductor (College/University instructor)
that can not meet during normal school hours.
Students will have an opportunity to participate in Pep Band, Jazz Band,
Indoor Percussion, Private Lessons, and a Community Band after school.
4. The band does perform
concerts (throughout the year) that do not take place during school hours.
Some performances are on weekends or in the evenings.
Various performances are a Fall Concert, Christmas Concert, Festival
Concert, a Spring Concert (Picnic at the Pops), and performances for the other
schools in our district.
